The World’s Most Mobility-Friendly City

Getting out and about if you use a wheelchair or mobility scooter can be an enormous challenge at times – it can affect where you choose to visit and the quality of your life.

Most places make an effort to ensure that their locations are as mobility-friendly as possible, but they can certainly all do better!

Breda

Breda is a city in Holland that has been making waves in how it caters for people who suffer from limited mobility. It won the 2019 Access City Award for its fantastic work, spear-headed by ‘Breda For Everyone’ – an organisation that represents different local institutions that support people with disabilities.

Older European towns are often challenging for wheelchairs and mobility scooters with their cobbled streets and antiquated town planning. Breda, on the other hand, has pulled up the bumpy pavement of the city centre to create a flat surface for wheels, while installing portable ramps to every quaint shop that now allow unfettered access for every disabled person. In addition to this, all bus drivers are trained in disability awareness and all buses and bus stops in Breda are also fully accessible to wheelchair users. There has also been a big effort on the part of the hotels and accommodation of the city with physiotherapy facilities as well as accessible rooms with lowered wardrobes and mirrors, wheel-in showers and seated baths. Wheelchair and mobility scooter users don’t even have to pull open front doors as they have cameras installed that open the door automatically without having to lift a finger!
