Garston, Liverpool
Garston is a district of Liverpool, England, that lies on the eastern banks of the River Mersey. It is bordered by the suburbs of Grassendale, Allerton, and Speke, and has a population of about 16,000 people. Garston has a rich and varied history, dating back to medieval times, when it was home to a group of Benedictine monks. The name Garston comes from the Old English word ‘Gaerstun’, meaning ‘grazing settlement’ or ‘grazing farm’. Alternatively, it may derive from the Old English or Norse word ‘Gar’, meaning ‘spear’, suggesting that Garston was a place where spears or other weapons were made.
History
Garston’s growth accelerated in the 19th century, when it became an important industrial and maritime centre. In 1793, a small dock was built at Garston for Blackburne’s Saltworks, which still stands today. In 1846, the first of three larger docks was constructed, under the auspices of the St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway Company. The docks enabled Garston to trade with the rest of the world, especially with Ireland, and attracted many migrants to work and live in the area. In 1903, Garston was incorporated into the city of Liverpool, and became part of its thriving economy and culture.
